Pointing Others to Jesus

Upper Room Prayer Guide

February 23, 2020

Bad news seem to be every which way we turn these days. Our normal routines are disrupted by the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Korea. Opinions over this and that are loud and endless.

There is good news. God has positioned His church to bring forth his life and hope to this broken world. God has not abandoned this world that He dearly loves. He is in control. He is. Even down to the nitty-gritty details of our lives. Let’s not pull back, or put up with the spirit of fear that is dominating our nation. Let’s stand up for such a time as this!

As you follow through the prayer guide for this week, prayerfully consider where God has positioned you and what He wants to do through you. Fear and opinions will not change the world. The word of God more than ever is what the world needs. His Word that comes out of our mouth by His Spirit will change the world.

Our praying scripture component for this week focuses on a man in the Bible by the name of John the Baptist. You will notice that the whole of his life is all about pointing others to Jesus. He must increase; I must decrease. John the Baptist knew there is no greater joy than testifying to the world, the truth and hope that is found only in Jesus Christ. May we know deep in our hearts such joy as well. This week’s prayer theme of pointing the way carries over to the 5-Finger Prayer section below where we turn our prayer focus to those who point the way: educators, teachers, leaders who lead the way.

As you pray through scriptures, please keep these tips in mind.

Tips on How to Pray Scripture

  • READ the verses slowly, listening with the ear of the heart.
  • REFLECT on the words, attentive to which word or phrase speaks most to you.
  • RESPOND to the word or phrase that spoke to you, chewing it over and over in your heart, offering it up in prayer.
  • REST in God, and listen for how God speaks through these verses.

Praying Scripture

There was a man named John who was sent from God. He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.John 1:6-7

(Optional: Read through the whole of John the Baptist’s life and testimony in John 1)

To bear witness to someone or something is to testify to what one has seen, heard, experienced as true.

Is your life all about bearing witness to God right where you are with what He has given you? Or is your life still about you?

Praise God He has given us the power to witness boldly. Our life is worth telling the story of God because it shows who God is. It is what will bring hope to this world. Testify together the greatness and goodness of God in your small group.

Surrender to God those areas in your life that you are holding tightly to. Learn to lean in to Father God, his ways are gentle. Trust in His voice and care for you. Experience the true freedom that comes from knowing your old self, old habits, are done away with and that Christ lives in you now 24/7. How Christ lives his life through us will be different from person to person. What does it mean for you?

Prayer is a powerful weapon to counter the evil forces of this world. The nation has been on edge since the coronavirus outbreak. It has affected our ability to gather together for a Sunday service. Perhaps you are gripped by fear and uncertainty. Take some time to pray. Some prayer points to consider:

  • For fear of the virus to be replaced by the fear of God
  • For people to be moved by compassion and not judgment towards any particular group of people
  • For protection over the believers in China and for God’s kingdom to prevail in the midst of this crisis

What else were you led to pray? How do you think God would want His people to respond to this crisis?

What were you led to pray? How does God want His people to respond to this crisis? Be attentive to any words, pictures, scriptures He brings to your heart.

Now substitute John’s name in the verse for your own name. Have someone in your group speak and pray this truth over you.

There was a ___________ named ______________ who was sent from God. ____ came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through ____.John 1:6-7

Intercessory Prayer

In the next five weeks we will use the “5 Finger Prayer” to guide us into praying for people from all walks of life. Check back each week for each finger reveal of the prayer points. This week our focus is on the thumb.

  • Thumb: The finger closest to you – Pray for those closest to you – spouse, children, extended families. Pray also for your spiritual family.
  • Index Finger: The finger that points the way – Pray for those who teach, instruct and lead the way
  • Middle Finger: The tallest finger – Feb.26,29
  • Ring Finger: The weakest finger – Mar.4,7
  • Pinky: The smallest finger – Mar.11,14

Some helpful verses to consider as you join hearts in prayer for those who teach, instruct, and lead the way, be it at home, school, university, office, church.

And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.Titus 2:7-8

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.1 Corinthians 15:58

To know wisdom and instruction to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity, to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth.Proverbs 1:2-4
